When I got my November program and noticed that I was going to be doing the Standard distance at Huskisson, I was a little indifferent to the idea. I had only raced one proper Standard distance before (Wollongong this year) and I can't say I enjoyed it too much! Racing at a higher heart rate isn't really my cup of tea. However, when Nathan explained that it was beneficial to do a Standard distance as a lead-in to a 70.3 (Xiamen, which would be two weeks after Husky), I decided to embrace it and see what I could make of the race.
Race day also came exactly one year since I had my bike crash that broke my shoulder so it was cause to “celebrate”.
Before the swim began, my wetsuit filled with water (it’s too big) and I got stung on the foot by a jellyfish (I can't seem to avoid them). I made a bad judgment call at the start by starting too far to the right and running into rocks that I had to pull myself over. In that time, I cut both my hands and lost the feet I needed to be on to stay at the front end of the swim. I was pissed off and probably let this get to me too much.
The bike was relatively uneventful apart from a small crash near the end of the first lap thanks to some poor communication by the traffic marshalls. Thankfully I didn't fall over. Throughout the ride I kept my heart rate within the range I was supposed to.
Off the bike I tried to just settle a bit into the run. However, it just wasn't happening! I felt pretty terrible for the majority of the run and it was a bit of a mental battle to keep pushing on. After 7kms I seemed to find some rhythm but the run was pretty much done!
I managed to finish second in my AG and fourth female overall - so the day didn't end too badly. Standard Distance still is not my favourite though!
