Port Stephens Olympic Tritahlon

This was my 2nd year coming back to the Elite Energy series event held at Nelson Bay, last year competing in the sprint distance. The morning of the race seen the weather produce the goods, with a slight breeze and clear sky's for the race day ahead. 

 

Racking my bike and sorting my gear, unwrapping my new sunnies that hadn't been worn yet. Excited and nervous at the same time knowing this was my last race of the season, wanting to bring a strong performance.

 

Down to the waters edge seen my usual routine of wetting the goggles and rolling the arms over, only too see my wave lined up setting there watches. Panic had set in as I scurried back to the start line sprinting up the beach, to here the marshall call '20 seconds".

 

Heart Racing from the get go, I set off down to the water, punching through the waves and tackling the rip, completing the 2 lap swim course. By far my hardest swim to date, trying exit the water each lap in a reasonably quick fashion from the hip deep water was a mission.

 

Over the sand dune, out of transition and onto the Bike leg. The first 10 minutes I was running at redline with my heart rate sitting at it's highest ever recorded in a race of 195BPM. Picking off 3 of the guys who beat me out of the water in the first bike lap of 3. Watching Mark Watson fly past in the other direction, was pushing me each lap to make sure I tried seeing him at similar spots along the bike course. Port Stephens bike course has a bit of everything to test your grit and perserverance when tackling the rolling hills, or gradual build to the turn around point. 

 

Into transition, racking my bike to notice my brand new sunnies had been stepped on and crushed into pieces. Internally fuming, proceeded to the run course. Started at my objective pace, and felt that I could maintain it for the duration of the 10km's, if I could zone out and keep ticking over. The swim by this point had really taken it's toll on me as my form became sloppy, before pulling it back together for the last 2 km's.

 

Finished 5th overall, and 2nd in age, taking out the series overall win for the 20-24 Olympic Distance with Elite Energy.

Last year Completing the sprint distance, all 3 of my splits were slower paced then my current result.

 

The 2017/18 has been an awesome introduction into the sport of Triathlon for me. Highlights from the season include, Purchasing my new bike, completing my first ever half ironman going sub 5 hours, taking 3 age wins, a 2nd, 3rd in a race distance I hadn't even completed prior to the start of this season. Having the opportunity to race at the national age group championships in Mooloolaba & Qualifying for the ITU age group final on the gold coast in September!

 

All of this couldn't have been achieved without the help and support of Nathan Miller as my coach. After joining Project M, and training with the awesome crew of athlete's on a weekly basis. My results started to reflect the hard work I was putting into my training, on Race Days. I still have a long way to go, plenty of strength to build and technique to perfect. But for my first serious season at having a crack, I'm well and truely stoked with my results!
