Huskisson Triathlon Festival – Race Report

What a great weekend it was in Huskisson. As usual the place was buzzing by Friday afternoon with a larger than usual crowd due to the Sprint Race on Saturday being a qualifier for Worlds.

After spectating all day Saturday and being inspired by the quality of the athletes who competed it was my turn to race on Sunday. Fortunately, I was in the first group to start, with all Over 40 women starting at 7.30pm. Conditions for the race were perfect, with Jervis Bay being crystal clear for the swim start.

The swim started well with a modified format to make a two-lap swim which was much easier for sighting. The swim for age groupers was wetsuit optional, which suited me and I had a good swim, coming into T1 after 35 minutes.

After a quick transition I entered the bike course at the same time as training partner Narelle Talbot and knew that I was feeling good for the race. The bike course, as always, is deceptive with more uphill and rough roads than anticipated on the Wollemi Road section. Once I reached Jervis Bay the ride was much more pleasant and before I knew it I was back in town being encouraged by the many spectators from Project M and ITC

On the second and third lap of the bike there was some good riding to be had as I battled it out with a male age grouper and a female competitor who had started in my wave. The final lap of the bike was busy with athletes from the later start entering the course as well as incoming traffic at a standstill on Wollemi Road. I started to feel my legs towards the end of the ride as well as the wind which had picked up significantly. Once I was back in T2 I started to think about the 20kms ahead of me.

In recent times I had been attending Project M run squad consistently, which really paid off for me. I was able to run the first 10km’s comfortably and wasn’t too bothered by the rising temperature. The final lap of the run was fun with many other athletes now on the course and spectators dotted over the course, providing much needed encouragement.

I had decided that I would pick up my pace for the final 5km and was more encouraged to do so when I ran past a fellow age group competitor. My nutrition throughout the race had been ideal and as I ran towards the finish line I felt really happy with my race, even though I wasn’t sure where I placed in the field.

AT the finish line I was extremely pleased to find out that I had won my age group in a time of 4.53 with more than 5-minute lead over 2nd place.

My goal this year is to qualify for IM World Championships at Port Macquarie IM. So far, I have had three great races, previously competing in Nowra and Canberra Standard distance, where I picked up 2nd in my AG at each and now coming out of Husky with a win – the plan is coming together!
