Husky Long Course Weekend

CSSA state triathlon On Thursday the 27th of October, I attended the Christian Schools Sporting Association, state championship triathlon. The event took place at the International Regatta Centre in Penrith. It was a glorious day for racing, 21 degrees and slightly overcast. It started with a 300 metre lake swim in the infamous Penrith lakes water, I was pleasantly surprised when I submerged myself in the water and it was relatively cool. As I started my swim I swiftly moved my way near the front of the pack, with only two well known swimmers in front of me. By the halfway mark the two swimmers and I had formed a pack out the front, the pack lasted till about 50 metres to go when the two swimmers broke away from me. After making my way into second place by the end of transition, I rode firmly for the whole 10 kilometre ride making my way into first within one kilometre. I felt good on the ride after increasing my swim and bike training during the late winter. After the bike I had put about three and a half minutes into the second place athlete. Making my way onto the run it didn’t take long to find my rhythm after struggling with that in my last couple of races. The run was an easy 3 kilometre out and back course, so I ran firmly the whole time and gave it everything I had in the last 150 metres. I ended in first place with a lead of about four minutes. Australian long course weekend On Friday, I attended the first ever long course weekend to be hosted in Australia. The long course weekend is run over three days, with each day focused on a different discipline of a triathlon. Friday was the ocean swim with the options of a: 750m, 1500m,1.9km or 3.8km swim. I raced in the 750 metre swim in the still water of white sands beach in Huskisson. The water was fairly cold so the new wetsuit was greatly appreciated. By the first buoy I had broken away from the rest of the athletes and was now swimming with an athlete participating the 1500 metre swim. We swam together for the majority of the swim till I lost him in the sudden mass of athletes from the longer distances. After exiting the water I had to run up the stairs into the white sands park at Huskisson. I won the 750 metre swim by over three minutes. The second day of the long course weekend was the bike ride. This took place from the University of Wollongong, Shoalhaven campus. The weather had warmed up from the day before, which made for a hot and sweaty bike ride. The bike distance options were: 20km, 40km, 90km, and 180km rides. I participated in the 20 kilometre ride, it was an out and back course with multiple undulating hills and one main climb to keep me busy. There was not much wind which made for a pretty easy ride which took me just over 35 minutes. I was the first person to cross the line. On Sunday we were back at Huskisson for the run. Again it was a very warm day for racing with the options of a: 5km, 10km, 21.1km or 42.2km run. I chose the 5 kilometre run, after a couple of successful days I was hoping to run a PB. On the starting line I was joined with the company of many athletes that looked like they were up for a bit of competition. Right from the start I was in second place behind a gun runner who went onto win. I felt good the whole way through the run and was feeling on track to get a PB, but as I crossed the finish line in second place I had missed out on my PB by only fifteen seconds. All up the weekend was a great success, I finally feel like my training is starting to pay off.
