A last minute decision to race at yarrawonga turned out to be a great idea, the 6hr car trip was well worth it for all 4 of us involved and may even become an annual weekend trip in future.
The race start was in the afternoon at 2pm which was something very different for me who had only ever raced in the morning but i found it quite relaxing without the alarm clock and rush to transition scoffing breakfast on the way like usual. The course was perfect for me with a freshwater swim in the murray river, a fast flat 2 lap bike course and same for the run.
Once the gun went off for the swim start it was game on and no one was giving any room and i copped more elbows and feet than any other race i had competed in, it lasted for the first 500mtrs until it spread out and i found a good rythm and a pair of feet to follow, as i exited i was happy with my swim and position. I had a terrible T1 running up the wrong row and lost about 20 seconds which felt like an hour.
Once i got going on the bike i felt great and stuck to my Hr the entire time which was a great due to the windy conditions which was a tail wind until the turnaround and then a head wind coming back, i rode past a lot of guys in the last 10km who had underestimated the strength of the wind which gave me a mental boost heading into the run.
Once i got out of T2 and onto the run which is my weakest leg i stayed patient sticking to my heart rate and was able to finish pretty strong in a time of 2:15hrs which i ended up 12th in my age group and earnt 13 points towards world championship qualification.
Overall I'm happy with my race but its nothing more than a base to build from for the rest of a long season ahead and high hopes of some big improvements before the next WCQ race early next year.
