Coffs Harbour Olympic
The Coffs Harbour Olympic Distance Triathlon is one of the races on the calendar i recommend to everyone to have a crack at. This event never disappoints. This year it doubled as a national series event as well as State Championship.
Soon after arriving at Coffs I did my usual pre race ride and swim making sure the race rig is functioning and to blow the travel cobwebs out of the legs.
Unfortunately didn't get the best lead up to the event with my main focus being this race and Mooloolaba Aussie champs the week later. I suffered a stress fracture in my foot and a ruptured tendon four weeks prior, with me being me I ignored the pain and pushed the last few weeks with a re structured training plan so I can still toe the start line.
With some strong Athlete's racing I was keen to get out there and have crack. From the gun the pace was on with Rio Olympian Ryan Fisher leading out of the water and that's where he stayed only extending his lead throughout the race. I had a pretty good swim coming into T1 in the second pack close to 2 minutes behind the leader. Out on bike course was where it was going to be make or break for everyone, the course has it all hills, quiet a few technical sections as well as some flat fast segments. Our positions never really changed from the front group to my second group coming into T2 which then left it for a sprint to the line. The run was is hot, a 2 lap flat and fast course where you could gauge your position the whole run. I was able to make up a good bit of ground leaders surprisingly considering my foot issue coming in at 11th overall and managed to take out State Champion for the 30-34 age group. Onwards and upwards for Mooloolaba.
